I’m sharing highlights and contextual information on Instagram and in this blog about our recent participatory multi-media project “Unlearn the Apparatus/Verlerne den Apparat”. The project consisted of two parts: the performance “The Plate Camera Intervention Game” and the photo-sound installation “Every Human is a Work of Art”. (Hildesheim, Germany, June 2026). The title emerged from collective critical debate. It dies also, accidentally, reverberate with an earlier porject titles "Strare.Print.Blue. - Voyeuring the Apparatus" (2014-15, Toronto and Berlin).
The poster design with dancing figures on a plate camera suggests, that we can playfully resist authoritative oppressions by media and technology and its dehumanizing uses throughout history. We have responsibility. We have agency. The project aimed at creating awareness of our colonial entanglements and the attempted decolonizing use of technology – such as the plate camera. What power dynamics are at play? What is the role of consent? How to unbox the black box? What is the purpose of image-making today? Can we explore the potential of artistic intelligence in the age of artificial intelligence?
